Prop Repair Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I know if I have the right propeller on my boat?
A. There are a few pieces of information we need to get to determine a proper selection.
- What type of boating do you like to do? – e.g. cruising, skiing, go fast, all the aforementioned
- What is the exact r.p.m. (revolutions per minute) of the engine at wide open throttle (w.o.t.) with your normal load (e.g. people, gear, fuel, water, if applicable) with your present propeller? If you don’t have a tachometer on your boat, most marinas can tach your boat for you for a nominal fee.
- What size and type is your engine?
- What is the manufacturer’s recommended w.o.t. (e.g. 4,200 to 4,600 r.p.m.’s)? If this information is not available to you, then a model and serial number will identify what r.p.m. range your motor is intended to run at.
- What is the diameter, pitch and material (or your part number) of your existing propeller? Note: when talking about propeller dimensions, diameter is always first then pitch (e.g. 14 ¼ x 21 aluminum OMC)
Once we have all this accurate information, a proper calculation can be made towards your existing propeller.
Q. What will a stainless steel propeller do for my boat?
A. It typically will give you the best possible performance that your boat was designed to do. On average, you could see a 2 to 4 mile per hour improvement at w.o.t. That would also mean an improvement in fuel consumption at mid-range.
Q. Will I do more damage to my unit with a stainless steel propeller if I hit something?
A. It is possible to do more damage to your shaft and gears on a direct hit to the prop with s/s. However, manufacturers today have made improvements to such components for better overall strength and durability.
Q. How badly damaged can my prop be before I need to fix it?
A. Any damage to a propeller’s blades, whether bent or actual material missing, will affect your overall performance. Normally there would not be an immediate strain on the lower unit bearings, but over time, bearings will wear and then seals can fail, resulting in major damage if oil is lost and water ingested in your lower unit. If damage is minor, repair cost would also be priced according to extent of damage making it practical to repair.
